<p>Ahoy winter followers!</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Our next appearance is as headline act at brilliant Edinburgh music venture, The Traverse Sessions. Set in the Traverse Theatre Bar, the lovely surroundings and most importantly FREE entry, makes it a great way to wash away the monday blues.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Appearing on the same stage will be two other stalwart Edinburgh faves, hard working veterans, <a href="http://www.sunshinedelay.com/">The Sunshine Delay</a> will be giving us the best alt-country moosic that Embra has to offer, expect harmonies, hooks and melodies strong enough to quell your craving for an overpriced doughnut (sorry, still amazes me frankly), and get you in the mood for a wiggle and a jiggle.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><a href="http://www.thedeadlywinters.com/2013/03/next-gig-the-traverse-sessions-embra-18th-march-free-entry/535127_449838791696204_1092574032_n/" rel="attachment wp-att-625"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-625" title="535127_449838791696204_1092574032_n" src="http://www.thedeadlywinters.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/535127_449838791696204_1092574032_n-300x111.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="111" /></a></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Also appearing will be <a href="http://www.lostinaudio.com">Lost in Audio</a> . Recently applauded for having sold the most tickets at the liquid rooms as an unsigned act in the last 5 years, their brand of catchy, radio-friendly pop-rock, and boyband looks will be sure to lift your hearts and libidos.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><a href="http://www.thedeadlywinters.com/2013/03/next-gig-the-traverse-sessions-embra-18th-march-free-entry/lost-in-audio-sold-out/" rel="attachment wp-att-626"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-626" title="lost-in-audio-sold-out" src="http://www.thedeadlywinters.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/lost-in-audio-sold-out-300x134.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="134" /></a></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>All in all, it sounds like a grand night. With 3 acts all with numerous years of live experience, and a range of styles to suit everyones taste, get yerselves down to The Traverse Theatre Bar and get ready for a monday night you should remember for a while.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>See you all there amigos.</p>

<p>Well, what a night!</p>
<p>After our first folk-club stripped winters gig last week, we were still a little uneasy at having learnt 3 new tunes with only 1 rehearsal, and those tunes all being learnt in stripped back fashion.</p>
<p>We were worried.</p>
<p>Our spirits were mightily lifted when we realised how good Other Roads are, and how lucky we were to be playing with them. Look how happy Graeme is!</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div id="attachment_610" class="wp-caption alignnone" style="width: 235px"><a href="http://www.thedeadlywinters.com/2013/02/other-roads-support-edinburgh-folk-club/285538_535676206463740_473383776_n/" rel="attachment wp-att-610"><img class="size-medium wp-image-610" title="285538_535676206463740_473383776_n" src="http://www.thedeadlywinters.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/285538_535676206463740_473383776_n-225x225.jpg" alt="" width="225" height="225" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">&#39;happy as larry&#39;</p></div>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Once arrived, we were quickly ushered by Paddy Bort onto what has to be our quickest yet probably best souncheck EVER, all thanks to the amazing talents, skill and intuition of soundman Jack Foster. Big thanks Jack, you are an outstanding pro!</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>So on we went&#8230;.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><a href="http://www.thedeadlywinters.com/2013/02/other-roads-support-edinburgh-folk-club/48140_561605120524687_632911155_n/" rel="attachment wp-att-611"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-611" title="48140_561605120524687_632911155_n" src="http://www.thedeadlywinters.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/48140_561605120524687_632911155_n-300x199.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="199" /></a></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>We played ; The Mines of Spennymoor, Lady Fayre, Troubadours, Normandy and finished with a short rendition of &#8216;Hanging Johnny&#8217; into closer, Hangmans Chorus. Audience seemed well pleased, and joined in on occasion, aided by lyric &#8216;scrolls&#8217; we had left on every table.</p>
<p>We quickly got our gear off-stage and stowed away, then after a quick intro from Paddy, main act (and our new heroes) Other Roads were on!</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><a href="http://www.thedeadlywinters.com/2013/02/other-roads-support-edinburgh-folk-club/601379_561606967191169_204670222_n/" rel="attachment wp-att-612"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-612" title="601379_561606967191169_204670222_n" src="http://www.thedeadlywinters.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/601379_561606967191169_204670222_n-300x199.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="199" /></a></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Cracking set, cracking songs, cracking guys. Cant say much more than that. Onstage banter is warm and engaging, and song topics were right up our alley. Managed to get a quick chat with Dave Walmsley after their first set, and what a lovely guy. Very appreciative of our sound and our approach to giving folk music a wee polish and fresh twist, but still keep the historical origins and passion in the songs.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div id="attachment_613" class="wp-caption alignnone" style="width: 159px"><a href="http://www.thedeadlywinters.com/2013/02/other-roads-support-edinburgh-folk-club/wpic1/" rel="attachment wp-att-613"><img class="size-medium wp-image-613" title="wpic1" src="http://www.thedeadlywinters.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/wpic1-149x225.jpg" alt="" width="149" height="225" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Gent - Dave Walmsley</p></div>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>So we were very happy.</p>
<p>Before Other Roads got back up again, we were treated to some tunes by Carole Prior, which got everyone back in the mood for a singalong, and ready for Other Roads 2nd set.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div id="attachment_614" class="wp-caption alignnone" style="width: 310px"><a href="http://www.thedeadlywinters.com/2013/02/other-roads-support-edinburgh-folk-club/554909_561606730524526_450023362_n/" rel="attachment wp-att-614"><img class="size-medium wp-image-614" title="554909_561606730524526_450023362_n" src="http://www.thedeadlywinters.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/554909_561606730524526_450023362_n-300x199.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="199" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Carole Prior</p></div>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>A triumphant second half from O.R&#8217;s put a great end to a fantastic night, full of music and new faces and friends. Us winters packed our bags, and went on down the road for a last beer and a few black coffee&#8217;s.</p>
<p>What a great night!</p>
<p>All photos taken by Allan McMillan, including this great one of Graeme, really capturing the atmosphere of the moment.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div id="attachment_615" class="wp-caption alignnone" style="width: 159px"><a href="http://www.thedeadlywinters.com/2013/02/other-roads-support-edinburgh-folk-club/541586_561605293858003_310111057_n/" rel="attachment wp-att-615"><img class="size-medium wp-image-615" title="541586_561605293858003_310111057_n" src="http://www.thedeadlywinters.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/541586_561605293858003_310111057_n-149x225.jpg" alt="" width="149" height="225" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Graeme on mallets during &#39;Troubadours&#39;.</p></div>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Next gig is (at the time of writing) 18th March at The Traverse Theatre Bar.</p>
<p>See you lot down the road.</p>

<h3><strong>The Deadly Winters-Raise The Coin EP</strong></h3>
<p>The Deadly Winters are a five-piece Edinburgh based acoustic folk rock outfit, who, to date have already caught the attention of the likes of The Scotsman, acclaimed <a href="http://jimgellatly.com/">DJ Jim Gellatly</a> and <a href="http://amazingradio.co.uk/?show=gillmills">Gill Mills</a> (Amazing Radio, NME) among others with their wonderfully well-crafted historical-based folk.</p>
<p>The past twelve months have been something of a whirlpool of activity for the band, they released their debut album to critical acclaim in their native Scotland, supported <a href="http://www.thestaves.com/">The Staves</a> and performed at numerous festivals, whilst also somehow finding time to write and record, Raise The Coin, a brand new four track EP, loosely based on people’s inherent lust for money and the lengths they go to gain it.</p>
<p>The EP opens with The Mines Of Spennymoor, a stunning folk rocker, that begins with strummed acoustic guitars, subtle atmospheric percussion and warm, rich and evocative vocal harmonies bringing to mind a stripped down <a href="http://www.bellowhead.co.uk/">Bellowhead</a> or <a href="http://www.sethlakeman.co.uk/">Seth Lakeman</a>, with their intelligent blend of thought provoking lyrics and instantly accessible melodies. Burke And Hare follows, with a gorgeous combination of plucked guitars, cooed vocals and shuffling percussion, whilst the somewhat macabre subject matter intrigues and intoxicates the listener further.</p>
<p>The two remaining tracks, The Hangmans Chorus and The Troubadours are equally as impressive, with the former featuring a toe-tapping, almost shanty like, chant along lead vocal hook and the latter being a gorgeous, hushed ballad complete with soaring vocal harmonies and pattered percussion.</p>
<p>The Deadly Winters bring history back to life with their compelling arrangements, evocative lyrics and mesmeric delivery, this is acoustic folk at it’s absolute best, if you like the work of Spiers And Boden, Jim Moray, the aforementioned Seth Lakeman or anybody of a folky persuasion I urge you to grab hold of a copy of Raise The Coin, you won’t be disappointed.</p>
<p>Rhythm &amp; Booze Rating 10</p>
